Build: Embracing Your Creative Journey
The Art of Building
We are always building and building upon our lives. We create layers of ourselves through experiences, layers of our work in action, and layers of our art as we express ourselves. We also build our sense of belonging, our memories, and the ways we carry ourselves through time. As we construct our physical selves, we also nurture our creative selves.
When I speak of Build in The Need-Not Artist, I don’t mean striving or forcing growth. I mean the slow, steady coherence of things coming together as they were always meant to. A life, a present practice, a body of work, a meaningful moment of truth on canvas — each built from what is already here and from what you already are. All-ready.
Building Your Creative Foundation
From the book:
"Build: Build your creative foundation, which becomes experience to grow your talent. Please don’t set rigid rules; instead, be kind to yourself and play. If you’re not having fun, you won’t want to create, so make it fun. Set simple daily steps for you to grow comfortable with your creativity. Maybe while you drink your morning coffee, you draw the coffee cup. Or during your lunch hour, draw what you see: a tree or a pen. Or note the things you’d like to create."
To build in this way is to trust. Trust that each simple, small line and casual choice holds the shape of something whole. Trust that missteps become texture and a fun story, not a fear of failure. Trust that what your hands are holding as you create already knows its way.
The Joy of Playful Creation
This painting of the word "build" is a quick, fast, playful interaction. Yes, I could have taken days to perfect it, hours to layer it, and months to revisit it, but I chose not to. I understood that building something can come in many forms. For this piece, fast and fun was the answer.
So I ask: What are you building right now? Can you let it rise and realize not from the pressure of perfection, but from the genuine ground of what you already are? All ready are. <3
Finding Inspiration in Everyday Moments
Inspiration can be found in the simplest of moments. Perhaps it’s the way the sunlight filters through your window in the morning, casting a warm glow on your favorite chair. Or maybe it’s the sound of laughter from a nearby park, reminding you of the joy in connection. These moments can spark creativity and help you build your artistic foundation.
Consider keeping a journal to capture these fleeting inspirations. Write down your thoughts, sketches, or even snippets of conversations that resonate with you. Over time, you will build a treasure trove of ideas that can fuel your creative journey.
Embracing Imperfection
It’s essential to embrace imperfection in your creative process. The fear of making mistakes can be paralyzing. However, remember that every artist has faced challenges and setbacks. These experiences often lead to growth and innovation. Instead of viewing mistakes as failures, see them as opportunities to learn and evolve.
When you allow yourself to create without the burden of perfection, you open the door to unexpected discoveries. You might find that a seemingly flawed piece becomes your favorite, or that a spontaneous choice leads to a breakthrough.
Building Community Through Art
Art has a unique ability to connect us. By sharing your creative journey with others, you can build a supportive community that encourages growth and exploration. Consider joining local art groups or online forums where you can share your work and receive feedback. Engaging with fellow artists can inspire you and provide valuable insights into your practice.
You might also explore collaborative projects that allow you to combine your talents with others. These experiences can lead to new friendships and a deeper appreciation for the diverse ways people express themselves through art.
The Power of Reflection
As you continue to build your creative practice, take time to reflect on your journey. What have you learned about yourself? How have your experiences shaped your art? Reflection can help you gain clarity and insight, allowing you to move forward with intention.
Consider setting aside a few moments each week for reflection. You might meditate, write in your journal, or simply sit in silence with your thoughts. This practice can help you reconnect with your creative vision and remind you of the joy that comes from building something meaningful.
Conclusion: Your Creative Journey Awaits
Building is a lifelong journey. It’s about nurturing your creativity, embracing imperfection, and finding joy in the process. As you continue to explore your artistic path, remember to be kind to yourself. Allow your creativity to unfold naturally, and trust that you are already equipped with everything you need to create something beautiful.
So, what will you build today? Let your imagination soar, and remember that every small step contributes to the masterpiece that is your life.
